Minnesota Vikings were founded in 1961 and were the first team to be based in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area (Twin Cities) since the Minneapolis Marines/Red Jackets who played on and off in the NFL in the 1920s and 1930s. They were originally offered a franchise in the new American Football League (AFL) but joined the NFL 5 months later instead due to pressure from the league. Ole Haugsrud was included in the NFL team ownership as, in the 1920s, he had sold his Duluth Eskimos team back to the league which allowed him 10 percent in any future Minnesota team. Mr Haugsrud' high school, Central High School in Superior,WI was also called the Vikings had similar uniform colours as they continue to use today.

During the 1960s, the Vikings' record was typical for an expansion team but continue to improve including a Central Division title in 1968 and won the 1969 NFL Championship Game, prior to the 1970 merger and therefore they have not won a Super Bowl but have appeared in 4 (IV, VIII, XI, IX).
