New Orleans Saints played their first season in 1967 and were the brainchild of local sports entrepreneur Dave Dixon who would go on to build the team's current stadium Louisiana Superdome and founder of the United States Football League.
In their early years, the Saints were not successful and in 1980, they lost their first 14 games to which local sportscaster Bernard 'Buddy' Dilibertoadvised its supporters to wear paper bags and many started nicknaming the team the 'Aints'. Despite recent successful seasons, the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV following the 2009 season.
Saints was chosen as the team name after the jazz song most identified with New Orleans – "When the Saints Go Marching In", and it was no coincidence that the franchise's official birth was announced on November 1, which is the Catholic All Saints' Day.
In 2005, due to Hurricane Katrina devastating New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast region, the Saints' stadium was used as an emergency, temporary shelter for displaced residents and therefore the team could not use it for their games. Therefore the team used various stadiums and at one point, owner Tom Benson thought that the Superdome might become unusable post-Katrina and was considering relocating the team to San Antonio,TX. However, at a cost of $185m for repairs and renovation, the Saints returned to the Superdome for the 2006 season.
