Tampa Bay Buccaneers played their first season in 1976 as the league expanded to 28 teams along with the Seattle Seahawks. This had been agreed as one of the conditions in 1966 whith the AFL-NFL merger which called for the league to expand to 28 teams by the 1970 season or soon after. The team is owned by the Glazer Family who also own Manchester United of the English Premier League and which is the most profitable football clubs in the world.
'Tampa Bay' is often used as a geographic metropolitan area that includes cities around a body of water known as Tampa Bay that includes Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater and several smaller cities. Tampa Bay is used by many local teams including Lightning (NHL), Rays (MLB), Rowdies (USL) and former teams Storm (Arena Football League) and Mutiny (MLS).
Buccaneers was chosen as the team name as a reference to the pirates that were present along Florida's Gulf coast during the 17th century. They have experienced difficult seasons including losing 26 consecutive games from 1976-1977 but won their first Super Bowl (XXXVII) for the 2002 season which is their last and only appearance. They have not appeared in the playoffs since 2007, a playoff drought of 12 seasons.
