SUPER BOWL
Updated: 10 july 2020
It began following the 1966 season (not adopting the Super Bowl name until the following season) and was originally played between the American Football League and NFL Champions before both leagues merged in 1970. The champion receives the Lombardi Trophy which is named after the 2x Super Bowl champions Green Bay Packers' Head Coach Vince Lombardi (right). Please note that the year shown is when it took place and crowns the Champion for the previous year, so the 2015 Super Bowl (XLVII) is for the 2014 season. Super Bowl L will be called Super Bowl 50 for the 2015 Season only.

Super Bowl LI (2017) was the first ever Super Bowl to go into overtime.

The host venue is chosen 3-5 years before it is to take place and must meet many criteria including the stadium must have a minimum of 70,000.
7 teams (Dallas, Denver, Green Bay, Miami, New England, Pittsburgh & San Francisco) have won 2 consecutive Super Bowls but 6 have come close to winning their 3rd (Dallas, Green Bay, Miami, New England, Pittsburgh & San Francisco). Buffalo lost 4 consecutive titles (XXV-XXVIII) and both Denver (XXI & XXII) & Minnesota (VIII & IX) have lost 2 consecutive titles.

27/52 have been held in 3 cities; New Orleans (10x), Greater Miami (10 times) and Greater Los Angeles (7x). The winning city is not required to host the game in the same stadium that its NFL team uses and this has happened in 9 Super Bowls. Los Angeles's last 5 Super Bowls were played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA but this has not happened since 1993. They are generally played in outdoor stadiums with an expected average daily temperature of less than 50oF (10oC) unless the stadium has a fixed or retractable roof) and only 5 have been played in northern cities like Detroit area (5x - Detroit and Pontiac), Minneapolis, MN (2x) and Indianapolis, IN (1x).
