NORTH AMERICAN WEST
Birmingham Fire were formed in 1991 as a founding member of the World League of American Football. At the time, they were being considered a franchise along with Nashville, San Antonio and Orlando. They qualifed for the playoffs twice in 1991 and 1992. |
They were chosen because of past support for professional football with the WFL's Birmingham Americans (1974) and Birmingham Vulcans (1975) and USFL's Birmingham Stallions (1983-1985). |
Fire aimed to host World Bowl '92 by expanding Legion Field from 72,000 to 80,000 and adding luxury skyboxes and a giant TV scoreboard. However, the game was awarded to Montreal instead. |
The team name was resurrected in 1995 with the Rhein Fire when the league returned as a solely European league. |
