NFL EUROPA TEAMS
London Monarchs were formed in 1991 and played in the European Division of the World League of American Football along with the Barcelona Dragons and Frankfurt Galaxy. They only qualified once for the playoffs in 1991 (their first season) and became the inaugural World Bowl champions. |
In 1991 and 1992 the Monarchs played their home games at the famed Wembley Stadium. Despite a new regional rivary, Edinburgh-based Scottish Claymores, there was dwindling interest in the team and they moved to White Hart Lane, home of the Premier League's Tottenham Hotspur FC when the league returned in 1995. However, the team played on a smaller pitch measured of 93 yards, instead of the standard 100 yards with 120 including both 10 yard endzone. They were forced to find an alternative venue in the form of Stamford Bridge, home to Premier League's Chelsea FC, and where they would play in the 1997 season.
|
Following the 1997 season, they were rebranded as the England Monarchs for the 1998 season and played in various stadiums across England including Crystal Palace National Sports Centre in London, Ashton Gate (home of Bristol City F.C.) and Alexander Stadium, an athletics stadium in Birmingham; where crowds dwindled to under 6,000. |
They folded and replaced by the Berlin Thunder for the 1999 season. |
The team name has since been resurrected, with a few changes, by the British Football League's London Monarchs. |
