The World League of American Football was introduced by the NFL in 1990 as a way of introducing American Football to a wider audience. It was the first professional league since the United States Football League folded in 1986.

Teams were based in North America including Canada and Europe. Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks were replaced by Ohio Glory, having not won a single game, for the 1992 season.

WLAF returned in 1995, and was founded by former members of the WLAF (Barcelona Dragons, Frankfurt Galaxy & London Monarchs) and 3 new teams Amsterdam Admirals, Rhein Fire & Scottish Claymores (playing in both Glasgow and Edinburgh).

In 1998, the league was rebranded as NFL Europe League. That same year, England Monarchs folded and became the Berlin Thunder with F.C. Barcelona Dragons replaced by Cologne Centurions in 2004 and Scottish Claymores by Hamburg Sea Devils in 2005.

The following year it was rebranded as NFL Europa. But in 2007, the NFL closed the league as it was losing $30 million per season.
