In the film, Adam Sandler plays the disgraced quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Paul Crewe who is forced to create his own team (Mean Machine) from prison inmates to play football against the Guards. Burt Reynolds, who played Sandler's role in the 1974 film, plays the Mean Machine's coach.
